All surfaces and spaces be warned.

In any form or medium the simplification process or the breaking down of the idea to its purest and most natural form can be a daunting task. But when solved can create a thing of beauty.
To be able to take a step or two back from what is placed in front of you and see the bigger picture trough the eyes of the user or viewer. To be honest with yourself and question if, when, what, how, why and who repeatedly and not get discouraged by having to start over. To test and collect information, and then go back and make changes. Test again and then repeat if necessary.
Failure is a good thing. Embrace it. Success is short lived. Embrace it also.

When we begin to think of the changing ways of communicating ideas, there looks to be no end in sight on how this will be done.
As our hand held devices become as powerful as a laptop, the question arrises: what does this do to how we design?
Flash, CSS, HTML5, APK, iOS, Android, Nokia, Windows… Screen Size, Screen Resolution… Swipe, Click, Double Tap… Media Tags, Responsive Design, Fluid Layouts, the 960 Grid… Yes Please!
Sales of Smart Phones, Tablets and Notebooks are outselling what has become a household standard in Desk and Lap Top computers. In the last 4 years we have seen this incredible jump in technology and I find myself asking "what next?"
The future looks to be a challenging and exciting place to be.

I was approached by RACC (Regional Arts and Culture Council) to see if I could come up with an idea on how to have a student show that would travel throughout the region for 6 to 9 months. I have always wanted to use those moving PODS for something, and this was the project. A mobile (as well as storable) gallery that contained 3 monitor stations as well as listening areas.

A two month show created out of painted pallets. The viewer was invited to move, stand or play with any of the 24 pallets. During the second month, the viewer was invited to become the artist by sketching out what they would do if they had 24 pallets at their disposal. Two ideas were then picked and created, lasting about two weeks each. At the end of the show, pallets were placed curbside, picked up and put back into shipping rotation.

Massive group show by Launch Pad Gallery in Portland. 100+ artists created works that were housed in a refurbished industrial warehouse and shown during the month of February. The piece you see here was created from six rings of plastic cups that sat on top of each other. It was one of the only floor pieces to be submitted to the show which made for an interesting place for children to play in.

This was a Caldera Arts inspired project working with students between the ages of 13-17. The project included a television wall which displayed videos created by the students; a 'Pod' wooden structure that projected the students poems and videos simultaneously; students poems printed on clear overhead projector plastic (this made the words hard to see unless something was behind the poem like a hand or a piece of paper). Shown at the W+K building in Portland and gallery space in Redmond.

A show that consisted entirely of plastic cups, bowls and serving dishes purchased at 13 of the local Target stores. Stores were completely bought out of cups and bowls for this project which consisted of pieces numbered in the thousands came in only 4 colors. Pieces included standing flower like objects (as seen here) to what I like to call a 'poor mans Chihuli' chandelier composed of over five hundred pieces.

A collaborative project with artist John Larsen. The idea was centered around the name Tiger Woods. The hole was a collection of abandoned pallets that were cut up into pieces and arranged to look like a tiger. The space itself was filled with a yellow glow to give the feeling of being in the bright sun of the Serengeti. This was my third Holocene Mini Putt Putt where past holes included an outhouse and a minimal one putt hole. Look for a new Tiger Woods at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in July 2012.

Project involving fiber glass, plastic resign and stenciled patterns. All patterns were first created in Photoshop and/or Illustrator, printed and cut out on clear transparency sheets. Sizes varied from one to two foot squares that glowed in the sunlight.

Getting to show work outside park setting rarely happens in Portland. I was given a chance to show at a community garden under a freeway in Portland, and jumped at it! The show included minimal pieces that doubled as bird houses. Pieces were placed throughout the garden in many forms that resembled flowers and vines. All works were created from plastic cups.

This project happened in correlation with Affair, an art show at the Jupiter Hotel. The Jupiter Hotel was changed from their distinguished blue glow to red in a course of a few minutes. The hotel stayed red for the weekend and then slowly changed back to blue on a lazy Sunday evening. Most of the lights were donated after the project and some can still be seen on the outside of the Hearth building at Caldera in Central Oregon.

Several string projects exist throughout the city of Portland. Two office buildings have permanent pieces that measure over twenty-five feet long and three feet wide of rich colored string and thread. This thread is wrapped over and over to create thick bands of color that resemble ribbon. This tactile project is constantly touched by viewers investigating what material was used to create these wall pieces. Smaller versions which were called 'Portables' were also created around the larger pieces.

Ulsan, South Korea hosted this symposium working with artists and designers from around the globe to promote cross continental sharing of ideas visually. My entry was 'Second Place Americana', which was images taken after a bowling tournament where the team had come in second place. Korea (I came to find out) is a country that takes bowling very seriously. Images were not for purchase but could be downloaded online for free when asked about in the gallery.

Once a year local animal hospital Dove Lewis has artists donate works created around animals. This piece was created out of printing dog images on tracing paper, then hand painting bits of color and covering the whole thing in plastic resin. The painting/collage was turned into a calendar.

A collaborative, anonymous exchange between a writer and two artist. Poet Lacey Young, artist Kamaya Lindquist and myself participated in a secret collaboration involving the trade of ideas that started from a poem, then responded to through a piece of art. This process was repeated over the course of three months. At one point during the exchange the poet was asked to place herself in the seat of the artist which was done by handing her a map that led her to a camera to record her thoughts through images.

Traveling video installation of projected color fields through the use of televisions. Ten one hour videos were created on DVD's. Staff were asked to pick two or more DVD's each morning, the combinations of colors created from the projected light was always new to the viewer depending on what video was selected to play.

The Kitchen Sink crew's second Portland show that let artists take over half a floor of office space in Old Town, Portland. In this collaborative project, Vicki Lynn Wilson-Larsen, Dirty Walter Lee, John Larsen and myself developed the E.A.N. (Exterior Area Network) were the viewer was invited to communicate with people in other rooms as well as on the ground sidewalk through the use of irrigation pipes.

Branding, design + banner adds V1.0. Flash banners for Moblin through Livengood|Nowack in Portland. Moblin is a company that created a platform in Linux that provides positive user experiences on mobile devices. Eight different designs were created that are still being used as promotional material. Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash.

Promotional material that included illustration, web, print and animation promoting Portland's green buildings and architecture firms and companies keeping the city at the forefront of the green building trend. With this very large scale project I was very lucky to get the chance to design a bicycle bell that was given away in Denver in helping promote the cities large bicycle population. Now in its 5th year with just over 1500 Santas and still true to the cause. A couple of weeks prior to the announcement that Portland Santacon was being held out in Hillsboro (2008), a plan was conceived of holding our own version in North Portland. In the mass confusion of where the con was being held and us as a group only expecting about 75 Santa's was quite an eye opener for the businesses as well as our changing our plans on the fly of the days events. By the first watering hole we had 200+, by the second 300+, by the third 500+, then we stopped counting. Promoting the event was all done through Wordpress and word of mouth.

Participated and organized one of Portlands institutional alternative events. And yes, that my crews office space.

I was brought in as a stage manager for the entertainment that was going on around the main entertainment (that you see in this image). The Beasties performed a show for about a crowd of 300. Many people left prior to the show thinking that the music guest was going to be Phil Collins...

Organization of special events that let creative talent meet and greet other creatives as well as project managers, small firm owners.... prospective clients.
